I agree with Kerry O'Connell. Given numerous dire warnings received after admitting to solo backpacking (I have even been stopped and lectured in the Lake District), I cannot help wondering if the Start Smart people have an ulterior motive - stopping solo hikers. However, I haven't read Start Smart so I'll get to the point.

How fit was the hunter? Fitness has always seemed like the first item of safety kit to me.

How experienced was the hunter? Had he ever learned that Homo sapiens can continue almost indefinitely when the chips are down. I caught a bit of Joe Simpsom last night, discussing his decision to abseil further into the crevasse. He said in survival situations we must continue making decisions even if they are wrong. Did the hunter stop too soon?

I went through a long apprenticeship, on small hills in the Midlands of England before graduating to solo backpacking in the Scottish Highlands. Modern levels of wealth mean young people can get into the best bits of wilderness without an apprenticeship - and they almost always cope - but sometimes things go wrong. Then, if there is no mobile phone signal, they are in trouble because they haven't had a chance to learn and train.
